Safety in Design

Q: Why incorporate Safety in Design?
A1: You will be providing consideration to the safety of others
A2: It’s the law; part of the WHS legislation

Traditionally design professionals have focused on the safety of the end user such as the building occupant or equipment owner/operator.

Safety in Design is the formal consideration of design safety aspects associated with all stages of the design including construction, occupancy/operation and demolition/disposal.

Traditionally safety has not been addressed at the design stage due to:

  • an emphasis of safety responsibility at the construction stage,
  • a lack of safety in design tools, guidelines and procedures,
  • the designer’s limited role on the project team,
  • a lack of designer education and training,
  • designer’s traditional viewpoints on construction worker safety, and
  • a lack of understanding of the associated liability.
